About the Typeface

Jhumkaa is a calligraphic typeface shaped by the Latin-angle, which reinterprets the traditional classic Devanagari strokes.

The project involved designing a typeface based on a calligraphic exploration out of many.

My approach was to challenge how devanagari calligraphy is normally done by using the pen in different angles to create something unique.

The project is still in progress :)

This was Published in March 2025

GRACEFULLY BULGED:

The glyphs are influenced by the form of the graceful "jhumkaa".

Jhumkaa was Designed on FontLab 7

THE OPPOSITE ANGLE:
Using an angle completely opposite to normal devanagari was a great challenge to take!

CHIPPED-OFF EDGES:
For a subtle touch of metal while cutting of the edginess of the font to make it a little softer.

FLAT AT BASELINE:

Main takeaway from a jhumka's form was their flat bases when viewed from the front, which led to this decision.
